inspirations & fascinations

in memory: alexander mcqueen

When I saw the news early Thursday morning, my jaw literally dropped.  Alexander McQueen (born Lee Alexander McQueen), one of my all-time favorite fashion designers, had passed away.  This is a big loss for the fashion world, especially now since New York Fashion Week has arrived.  Scheduled to release his new line this week at McQ—a pleasant surprise since McQueen did not usually present at New York Fashion Week—his publicist announced Thursday afternoon that his show had been cancelled.

McQueen was revolutionary and inventive, and his colleagues revered him as a genius many times over:
“…the most inspiring, creative, genius designer of now.” -Betsey Johnson
“McQueen was a master of fashion, creative genius and an inspiration. Today the fashion industry has lost a true great.” -Victoria Beckham
“…a kind soul and brilliant creative genius.” -Joe Zee, Elle magazine creative director
“At one level, he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius.” -Alexandra Shulman, Vogue editor
“He was a genius and his talent was second to none.” -Matthew Williamson

A handful of news sites around the web mention suicide, his latest Twitter updates dismal and troubled concerning the news of his mother’s recent death.  However, I know that McQueen will always be remembered as an icon, a brilliant designer whose taste and creative flair never went unnoticed.  Rest in peace, Alexander McQueen… the world will never forget you.

“He leaves the fashion world with an unfillable void.” -Dolce & Gabbana
